RULE THE KITCHEN

WORK WITH WHAT’S ALREADY THERE Rather than rip out the book-
shelves—the only bit of architectural character in the room—and toss
them in a landfill, Beth gave them an update. She ordered new doors from a
home store, then had the upper doors fitted with glass. Brian hauled the old
doors to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which collects cast- off building
materials and resells them at a discount to fund its building projects; habitat.org

GIVE FURNITURE ASECOND CHANCE To save money and avoid waste,
Beth decorated around furniture she already had, slipcovering her sofa
and relocating a pair of leather chairs from another room. Where new was
needed, she chose versatile pieces, like the upholstered ottoman, with frames
made from certified-sustainable wood and recycled metal springs. Cushions
are made with renewable resources like soy and corn rather than the usual
petroleum-based ingredients. Bench
